Fence Permit Requirements in Canton MI.

The building department at Canton Township can be tough to deal with and also take a long time to approve your fence permit. Usually, we expect to receive an approval in 3-4 weeks unless you do not have the proper paperwork and make sure it is filled out correctly. At Superior Fence, we will take care of all the permit paperwork for you if choose to hire our fence company to install your project!

Please note: Canton does require a notarized neighbor consent if the fence is being installed on the property line. You can avoid this by bringing the fence in 3-feet from the property line. Canton Township used to require Homeowner’s Association approval letter but no longer requires the document. However, it is still very important to obtain approval from the HOA you live in as you must abide by their regulations.

The total cost of a fence permit is $90. The administration fee is $40 to review the permit with an addition $50 dollars for the fence permit itself.

Permit Application

Use this link to download the fence permit application. Fill out the application with details regarding your property and proposed fence. Once completely filled out and signed, turn it into the Canton Building Department. Be sure to include notarized neighbor consent forms if applicable.

Proposed Layout

A detailed layout of the proposed fence must accompany your fence permit application. This proposed layout will need to include any buildings or structures on the property, any existing fences, and measurements of the proposed fence.

Neighbor Approvals

If you will be removing a shared fence and replacing it with a new fence OR installing a new fence on a shared property line, you are required to have your neighbor(s) sign a neighbor approval form and submit it with your permit application. Each adjacent neighbor that will be sharing the fence must fill out a form.

You can avoid a notarized neighbor consent by installing the new fence 3-feet away from the property line.

Fence Ordinances in Canton Michigan

Below is a brief overview of the fence ordinances for Canton Michigan. This is not a complete or definite list and should never be used in support of a dispute. Click here to review the complete document of codes and ordinances regarding fences in Canton.

Design & Height Requirements

The maximum fence height allowed in Canton is 6 feet tall for a privacy fence. However, for products like chain link fencing may only be allowed at a max height of 4 feet tall. Canton also requires that fence posts be installed at a depth equal to at least half of the height of the fence (regardless of fence height, we recommend around 38-42 inches deep).

Just about all common fence types and styles are allowed such as vinyl fence, aluminum, chain link and wood. It is also important that you check with any homeowners association that you may belong to regarding the approval of your fence as some associations have their own fence requirements that are separate from the city ordinances.

Location Requirements

All fences installed in Canton Michigan must be installed on the inside of your shared property line unless you and your neighbor apply for a joint permit (you both apply for the fence together). You are also required to build all fences so that the finished/good side of the fence is facing your adjacent neighbor(s) rather than your property. This is what we call “good side out“.

No fence may extend forward beyond the front face of your house. If you are a corner lot, in most cases, you may extend beyond the side of the house (towards the side street) as long as your fence is installed at least 1-ft away from the public sidewalk. But, the height of the fence will likely have to be 4′ tall once you reach the rear-corner of the home and extend towards the front corner.

There are a lot of exceptions to these rules and Canton Township is a difficult city to navigate at times… If at any point you have questions about what is permittable and what is not, please give Superior Fence a call. We have a lot of knowledge when dealing with Canton Township and can try to help you understand what is allowed for fences in this city. We are happy to help!
