Design & Height Requirements
In Farmington Hills you can install any common fence type and design. This includes vinyl, wood, chain link, and aluminum. The maximum height allowed for fences is 6-ft tall in the backyard.
Any fence being installed in a front yard cannot exceed 3-ft in height and must be an ornamental fence, such as aluminum. No fencing can extend beyond the front corners of the house.
The finished side of fences installed in Farmington Hills can face either the homeowners property, or their neighbor’s property. This means that the posts and rails can be positioned on either side of the fence and the finished side of the fence may face either property.
Location Requirements
Fences can be installed in your backyard and along the sides of your house but not beyond the front corners of your house. The exception to this is an ornamental or decorative fence that can be installed in your front yard if it does not exceed 3-ft in height.
If you live on a corner lot and and would like your fence installed towards the sidewalk, you will need to make sure that your fence is at least 1-ft away from any public sidewalk and meets all pedestrian visibility requirements where your driveway is located. This means that there is an area where the fence cannot be placed which is made up of a 10×10-ft cutback from your driveway to allow visual clearance.
