Design & Height Requirements
Garden City will allow you to install pretty much any common type and style of fence. These common fence types include vinyl fencing, wood fencing, chain link fence, aluminum fence, and composite fencing. Some styles that are allowed include privacy fencing, picket fences, and ornamental fences. The maximum height for residential backyard fences in Garden City is 6 feet tall.
When building a fence in Garden City you are required to build it with the finished side of the fence facing your neighbors. this means that all posts and rails must be on your side of the fence and the smooth/finished side of the fence must be on your neighbors side of the fence.
Location Requirements
All fences installed in Garden City must be entirely on the installing party’s property unless the installing party and their neighbor(s) file for a joint permit. In that case you can install the fence on the shared property line. It is also important to note that all fences must stop at the rear corners of your house unless you have a side door giving access to your house/garage. If this is the case, you can have your fence extend beyond the side door but not quite to the front corners of the house.
If you live on a corner lot and want to have a fence installed in your side yard (facing the side street) you may do so but your fence must be a minimum distance of 1-ft away from all public sidewalks. You must also follow all pedestrian sight ordinances which requires your fence to not be installed within 10-ft in any direction of where your sidewalk and driveway intersect. This is to make sure that you can properly see pedestrians on the sidewalk when pulling out of your garage/driveway.
