Fence Ordinances in Plymouth Michigan

Below is a brief overview of the fence ordinances for Plymouth Michigan. This is not a complete or definite list and should never be used in support of a dispute. Click here to review the complete document of codes and ordinances regarding fences in Plymouth.

Design & Height Requirements

All fences that we offer at Superior Fence are approved fence types and styles in Plymouth. These include vinyl fencing, wood fencing, chain link fence and aluminum fences. You are also allowed to install most current styles such as privacy fences, picket fences, and ornamental fencing.

The maximum height for privacy fences in Plymouth is 6 feet tall and the max height for non-privacy fencing is 4 feet tall. The only exception to this may be if you are an adjacent neighbor to a commercial property in which case you may be allowed a max height of 8-ft.

All wood and vinyl picket fences in Plymouth must be designed using a 1″x3″ picket with 3″ picket spacing and no less than a 90 degree angle for the picket top. This is to prevent having too sharp of picket caps. Ornamental aluminum fences (sometimes called picket fences) are the exception to this in regards to picket width but still cannot have sharp picket tops.

The finished side of all fences installed in Plymouth must face your adjacent neighbor and not your property. This means that all posts must be located on your side of the fence and the finished build side of the fence must face your property. This ordinance does not apply to fence types and styles that are the same on both sides (such as our vinyl fencing).

Location Requirements

Fences installed in backyards in Plymouth may be installed around the entire back yard and along the sides of your home. These fences cannot extend further forward beyond the front corners of the house or into the front yard.

Fences on corner lots may extend into the side yard, no closer than 3-ft away from the side property line and not extending beyond the rear face of the house (when running towards the front of the house).
